Did you know that most regular sewing machines have a special overlock stitch that mimics a serger's stitch? It has a small metal bar over which the needle is going on the right side of the fabric. Lower the needle and the foot. I do use it for sewing knits as it's a stretch stitch that mimics a straight stitch. I really appreciate your helpful hints! Thoughts? Great for hemming knits. I also have a Bernina and sadly didn't realize that you can also buy feet that include the cutting action, along with the serging action of a serger! I never understood the explanation there. If you have a zigzag stitch on your sewing machine you can sew zigzag stitches on the required seam allowances (not on the very edge though) and then cut of the excess fabric with scissors or a rotary cutter. But with medium weight cotton knit fabric which is less stretchy, this overcasting stitch works very nicely. :) I'm almost embarrassed to say this...I've had an overlock foot in my sewing box forever and didn't know it. Sometimes I just don’t want to take my serger from its storage place and look for threads of suitable color and re-thread my serger. i use my overlock stitch on every single garment i sew. So, we saw how overcasting stitches work for silk fabric. I actually dont even think i need a serger, because it has held up beautifully in the wash. When you’ve already made a line of stitching on your sewing machine, you don’t need a strong overlock stitch. But still, sometimes I use just overcast feet of my regular sewing machine – it’s easier if I need to finish raw edges on some small projects. I found it too slow, heavy, and bulky, especially when using standard sewing-machine thread.On my machines, the overcasting foot (which looks different from yours) also works with the zigzag stitch. It gives a smoother seam on the outside than a zigzag :). I sold my overlocker a while back,this will help a lot :-). I don't have a serger, so overlock works great as a seam finisher.
